GAUTENG AND NAIROBI, December 23, 2016 – “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela
Education is the foundation of future prosperity, that’s why at Snapplify we believe in making high-quality educational material affordable and accessible to all through digital learning. We believe digital solutions are able to address many of the challenges schools, learners and education departments currently face with non-digital methods and to address this, digital solutions need to be built in and for the emerging market classroom in order to suit the learning environment and be effective. Key projects supporting digital learning in Africa are currently underway in South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
In South Africa, the Gauteng Department of Education is rolling out Learning and Teacher Support material in print and digital form to all schools in the Gauteng province. As a partner to this project, Snapplify has been responsible for the rollout of all associated digital learning materials required for use in Gauteng’s public schools in 2017.
In Kenya, the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) is aimed at learners in all 23,951 public primary schools with the purpose of integrating digital technologies for learning purposes in the classroom. As one of the largest national level interventions in digital education on the continent, 1.2 million devices at a cost of KES29 billion (US$286 million) has been allocated to develop the content, provide training sessions for teachers and to distribute digital devices to schools for both learners and teachers.
With the emphasis on digital content and digital devices, Snapplify Kenya has partnered with other local software and hardware providers to increase access to digital learning materials in schools across the country.
“We are proud to be supporting important projects that empower schools and students across Africa to embrace digital learning. It’s important to us that educators are able to offer students access to worldclass educational materials and eLearning platforms, regardless of the challenges presented by a low-connectivity and bandwidth availability”, said Wesley Lynch, Snapplify CEO.
Other important pioneering EdTech projects on the continent include telecommunications company TIGO’s partnership with the Tanzanian Government to connect secondary schools to the internet as part of the eSchools Project, and Uganda’s Yaaka Digital Learning Network — a media platform for students and trainers in Uganda from pre-primary to university level education, to share and access digital academic materials through a number of mediums, including text, audio, audio-visual and video.
Snapplify’s eLearning solutions platform Engage was developed for use in the digital classroom environment, where with interactive content students are engaged, allowing for competency based learning and demonstrated mastery of the content. It enables schools to create one place, where students and educators can read, share and access resources, all at the click of a button. With digital tools such as this, it not only enhances learners’ technological skills but it also has the power to lower school costs, as physical learning materials are expensive and can easily become outdated.
